Wild Heart Silent Retreat

Qigong. Yin Yoga. Meditation. Ceremony.

May 5th-10th 2024 at Land of the Medicine Buddha in Soquel, California

The Buddha often encouraged his followers to go into the forest to spend extended periods of time in retreat. He recommended this because to connect with the natural world is to connect with human nature. We, as humans, are nature after all. With modernization and the busyness of our day to day lives, the truth of our true nature has been forgotten and the results can be seen all around us. Stress, pollution, climate catastrophe, all speak to our disconnection from who and what we really are.

On this silent retreat, we will explore natural, sensory-based awareness and embodied mindfulness through the practices of meditation, Qigong, yoga, and inquiry. Held at the Land of Medicine Buddha (LMB) in the Santa Cruz mountains of Northern California, this sacred land offers an idyllic environment for you to connect with yourself and the world around you. In addition to our sessions together, there will also be plenty of free time to explore the lush forests surrounding LMB and the many stupas and shrines on the land.

“Nature supports our personal blossoming (if we have any quiet exposure to her) through her spontaneities, through her beauty, power, and mirroring, through her dazzling variety of species and habitats, and by way of the wind, Moon, Sun, stars, and galaxies.”
― Bill Plotkin

Why Silence?

Social silence will be held for the majority of the retreat. This means the focus will be held internally, and socializing with other participants will be saved for the beginning and end of the retreat time. While we also value the importance of community and connection, silence offers a rare opportunity to give the areas of our brain that are responsible for speech a time to rest, and to use that energy for genuine self-reflection. In many different traditions, retreat was not intended as a time to be social, but rather to work on the primary relationship you have with yourself and with the land. While we often think of renunciation as something lacking, it is a freedom and a gift to offer your attention back to yourself, your soul and to nature.

It is important to mention that silence also includes the renunciation of technology. We strongly recommend keeping your phone off, or at least on airplane mode.  If you require using your phone during retreat, we ask that you use it in only in private, so that others who decide to renounce are not taken out of there experience by others on their phone or laptop.
